Watch 1996 Irish Formula Opel season highlights from 7pm, Thursday December 23rd

Motorsport Ireland will stream highlights of the 1996 Irish Formula Opel season from 7pm, this Thursday

This week’s Motorsport Ireland – RIAC classic video from the RPM Motorsport collection is highlights from the 1996 Irish Formula Opel Championship.

Ireland’s premier single seater class in the 90s provided a thrilling championship battle in 1996. This season roundup contains highlights from 5 of the 10 rounds covering rounds in Mondello, Phoenix Park and Kirkistown. By the mid-way point of the season, Michael Edgar appeared to be the championship favourite as he aimed for his 3rd championship victory in 5 years, but a non-finish caused by a multi car collision in Kirkistown brought Derek Cunneely right into the championship fray. The scene was set for a title showdown in the final round at Mondello Park where Edgar and Cunneely would go head to head for the title. Despite Edgar’s best attempts however, Cunneely managed to fend him off in a spectacular wheel to wheel battle to claim the championship by 3 points.

This programme will be available to stream below from 7pm on December 23rd.

Next week’s upload will feature highlights from the star studded 2001 Punchestown World Rally Masters event.
