First three Sexton nominees announced

the prestigious sexton trophy, awarded to the young racing driver of the year.

The first three 2024 Sexton Trophy Young Racing Driver of the Year award nominees have been chosen. Hailing from all parts of Ireland, the three selections represent the best up-and-coming talent in circuit racing. This year, nominations will come in the form of a monthly selection, as adjudicated by the members of the Motorsport Ireland Race Commission.

May Nomination:

Brandon McCaughan
McCaughan’s incredible performances in the GB4 Championship racing in the UK were an obvious standout and secured him the first nomination of 2024 despite losing the drive due to a lack of funding. With a nomination under his belt, and eyes on the title of Young Racing Driver of the Year after finishing as runner-up in 2023, keep an eye on McCaughan for more flourishes before the year is out.

June Nomination:

Max Hart
Five-time nominee and three-time Sexton Trophy finalist, Hart is no stranger to this process. Continuing to build on his established career in TCR China, Hart’s performance in the month of June earned him a ticket to the next stage of the process. There are plenty of races left on his 2024 programme, so expect Hart to only go up from here.

July Nomination:

 Jamie Moylan
This is the first nomination for Moylan, who performed exceedingly well  in the Irish Legends series and as such, has moved his focus to the UK series. With a win at Donington Park and multiple other strong finishes, Moylan made a case for himself to be the first of the newcomers to the 2024 to grab attention.

Over the coming months, three more monthly nominees will be selected, with potential wildcards added to the mix at the end for standout drivers who just didn't quite secure one of the previous spots. The longlist of nominees will then undertake a formal interview process in November with a panel of judges representing Motorsport Ireland, Sport Ireland, the Motorsport Ireland Race Commission and members of the media.

The Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year award and the historic Sexton Trophy are presented to the individual who has demonstrated the most potential to represent Ireland at home and internationally both on the track as well as in the public eye. The winner will receive a €50,000 support package to help develop their motor racing career.

The overall winner of the 2024 award will be announced at the Motorsport Ireland Champions Awards Lunch in December. The award is presented annually and is supported by Sport Ireland and Motorsport Ireland.
