Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year, Josh McErlean, in action on Rally Isla Canarias.

The Irish rally contingent had a successful trip to the Canary Islands at the weekend for Rally Islas Canarias, the final round of the European Rally Championship, taking three of the top twelve placings and the ERC1 Junior title with its lucrative €100,000 top prize.

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy drivers Callum Devine/James Fulton and Josh McErlean/Keaton Williams, both driving Hyundai i20s, finished eighth and 21st overall, with Devine taking third position in the ERC1 Junior category.

Waterford’s Craig Breen and his Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle had another tyre testing rally in their MRF Tyres Hyundai, experimenting with various different compounds in the slippery conditions, and finishing eleventh.

However, the biggest winners were Finn Oliver Solberg, the 19 year old son of 2003 World Rally champion Petter Solberg, and his Irish co-driver Aaron Johnston from Fintona in Co Tyrone, in their VW Polo, who took fourth overall and runner up spot in ERC1 Junior.

This clinched the Junior title for the pair, with its €100,000 top prize towards the cost of contesting some of next year’s championship rounds.
