Competition Licences
Competition licences are issued to anyone who wishes to compete in motorsport while living in the Republic of Ireland, or anyone who holds an Irish passport who wishes to compete abroad.
Below you will find a helpful quick-start guide to see the best way for you to apply for your licence.
The Basics
-
Welcome! It can seem like a lot of information to take in when you first get involved with motorsport, so please feel free to contact the MI office with any query you may have.
The minimum age for licence holders is 6 years old. At this age, you can compete with a Kart Junior licence.
There are many different types of licences you can apply for. For first-time licence applications, we recommend using the online system rather than a paper application, because it will automatically correct towards what is available at this point in your motorsport career.
Depending on the type of licence you require, you may need to supply a doctor’s certificate. This is a paper form to be completed by your doctor. If applying online, you will be able to upload a photograph of this. If applying with a paper application, we recommend sending a copy of the form and holding on to the original in case it gets lost in the post.
If you are starting out in either Rallying or Racing, then you will have to attend a training day before the licence can be granted. To help facilitate this, we issue an Introduction to Motorsport pack, which can be applied for online and is then directly emailed to you. This includes all of the licence application documents, and information on how to book the training course.

Welcome back! If you previously held a licence with Motorsport Ireland, we probably still have a lot of your information on file. If you login to the system, you should see everything that we have saved.
If you don’t know your login information, you can contact the office to gain access to your account.
Please note that while we keep some information on file, you may need to provide updated documents when renewing, such as doctor’s certificates and ID photos.

Any competitor who is under 18-years old must have their parent/legal guardian hold a Minor Entrant licence. This is applied for by the parent/legal guardian. This person must be present for sign-on at all events the under-18-year-old wishes to compete in.
For those wishing a third-party (anyone who is not a parent/legal guardian) to fulfill this role, then Garda Vetting is required. You will be asked to upload a paper copy of the Garda Vetting form when applying for this licence online.

If you are under 50 years old and applying for a National licence, you do NOT have to supply a new doctor’s certificate every year. We can keep one on file for you for many years.
If you are applying for an International grade licence, or you are 50 years old or older, then you will be required to submit a new doctor’s certificate every year.
Additionally, if you answer yes to certain questions on the Medical Self-Declaration, you will be required to submit a new doctor’s certificate, and potentially be required to do so annually going forward.
Motorsport Ireland reserves the right to request a new doctor’s certificate at any time from any competitor in order to ensure the safe running of the sport.
If you are unsure whether or not you need to supply a new doctor’s certificate, you can phone the office and we are happy to check what we have on file for you.

You’re moving up! Some types of motorsport licence require having completed a certain number of events before you are eligible for an upgrade, and some also require additional training.
There is an additional fee to upgrade your licence, as we need to verify event finishes. This can be paid through the online system, or by checking the box on the form if submitting a paper applicaton form.
The good news is that you can use a Race School or Rally School training day as one of your finishes if upgrading from a National B to a National A. Additionally, any two-day rally events may count as two finishes.
All event finishes must take place in the last 36 months to be eligible. The Race School / Rally School day may take place outside this time period.

If you have a Republic of Ireland passport, or a Republic of Ireland residence, you are eligible to apply for a Motorsport Ireland licence.
It is common for some people living in the UK or further abroad to apply for a Motorsport Ireland licence. In this circumstance, we would simply request authorisation from the host country to issue you with a licence. This is to make sure that you do not hold a licence in two jurisdictions at the same time.
Additionally, if you are another nationality, but have permanent residence in the Republic of Ireland, you can apply with a copy o your proof of residence (utility bill is usually provided). We will contact your country of nationality to request permission to issue the licence.
In both cases, as long as the person does not hold a licence in two jurisdictions at once, and has no pending violations or fines, then we can issue a licence.

If you’re stuck at any point in the process, contact Helena and Rob in our Licence Administration team. They’ll be happy to assist you with any competitor licence needs.
