Dermot Carnegie 1944 – 2025

Motorsport Ireland wish to the extend our deepest condolences to the family of Dermot Carnegie on his recent passing.

One of motorsport’s great all-rounders and a member of TDC (Trials Drivers’ Club), Dermot started in autotesting in the early 1960s, becoming a ten-time National Hewison Autotest Champion between 1967 and 1986. Dermot was successful in rallies, winning the Castlereagh Trophy when the Circuit of Ireland was a five-day marathon and scored numerous autocross wins as well.

However, in a career that spanned the best part of seven decades, it is for his achievements in rallycross that Dermot will be best remembered. Using the very best of machinery, Dermot won eight RIAC/MI National Irish Rallycross titles, two Northern Irish titles and six British titles (including two BRDA titles), between 1991 and 2008.

Following his retirement from Rallycross in 2008, Dermot continued to compete regularly in Targa Rallies and Classic Rallies, at home and abroad, and remained a competition licence holder up until his passing.

He was a wonderful ambassador for the sport, quietly supporting and advising younger drivers and his contribution was acknowledged when he was awarded the Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy for services to motorsport in 2006.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
